Solutions For The Plastics Industry

Holistic quality assurance for the plastics processing industry

Plastics testing is required for the qualification of polymer materials and products. Our experts acquire, quantify, evaluate and resolve quality-related questions from plastics technology using suitable test methods.

Polymer materials and products must withstand the planned exposure. We analyse thermoplastics, thermosetting plastics, elastomers, composite materials and foams for you and determine whether they have the necessary material characteristics and check the quality features of components manufactured.

We analyse your plastic components comprehensively and effectively for:

  • Geometric shape deviations due to distortion and shrinkage
  • Porosity and Inclusions
  • Fibre alignment and fibre volume ratios
  • Thermal characteristics
  • Material composition

CHEMICAL ANALYSIS OF PLASTICS

Thermal analysis:

Using dynamic differential calorimetry (DDC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), we inspect the thermal characteristics of your polymer materials:

  • Characterisation of thermal properties, e.g. determination of the melting temperature, glass transition temperature or crystallinity
  • Quantification of the material composition, e.g. polymer or plasticiser content, filler material content or remaining mass
  • Analysis of the thermal decomposition behaviour
  • For the identification and quantification of escaping decomposition products and volatile components, we couple TGA with FT-IR and GC-MS

Qualification and quantification of plastics and their additives:

We characterise and identify your polymer materials using spectroscopic and gas chromatographic analyses:

  • Verification and material identification using RAMAN and FT-IR spectroscopy
  • Analysis of volatile organic filler material, e.g. plasticiser or solvent using gas chromatography with coupled mass spectrometry (GC-MS)

ANALYSIS OF THE PARTICULATE AND CHEMICAL-FILMIC CONTAMINATION

Verification and identification of particulate and filmic contamination on function-related component surfaces

Particulate contamination:
We inspect organic and inorganic particles using microscopic and spectroscopic methods in relation to quantity, size class, material class and composition as well as the damage behaviour.

Filmic contamination:
We analyse manufacturing and cleaning residues such as oils, greases, cleaning media using qualitative and quantitative methods, e.g. test inks, fluorescence measurement, gas chromatography (GC) with flame ionisation detector (FID) and mass spectrometer (MS), RAMAN and FT-IR spectroscopy as well as gravimetric assessment.

GEOMETRIC DIMENSIONAL INSPECTION

Highly precise measurements of injection-moulded components for reliable product and process development

  • Individual dimensions up to serial measurements with large quantities
  • Preparation and validation of measuring programs
  • Highly precise measurement of standard geometries, freeform surfaces as well as shape and position tolerances
  • Nominal-actual comparison based on CAD data
  • Initial sample testing according to drawing requirements (e.g. VDA and PPAP)
  • Component qualification with and without positioning to simulate reliably distortion of the individual components in relation to the assembled state
  • Jig manufacture: CAD design and fabrication of measurement fixtures

NON-DESTRUCTIVE COMPONENT INSPECTION

A non-destructive look inside the component

  • High-resolution depiction of the 3D volume with the ability to detect detail down to 7 µm
  • Metrological evaluation of standard geometries and freeform surfaces on the voxel data
  • Geometry comparison, e.g. nominal-actual comparison or wall thickness analysis with colour-coded 3D depiction of the deviations
  • Versatile volume-based analysis options, e.g. defect analysis, porosity and inclusion analysis, assembly checking, fibre composite analysis, foam structure analysis and much more
  • Tool correction and reverse engineering
